What does Admiral Nelson have to do with Tenerife?

Posted in: Tenerife, The Harbour Club News- Jun 09, 2014 No Comments

The history of Santa Cruz – Tenerife’s capital – perhaps isn’t always valued as it should be and is possibly not known to many British visitors to the island. The city actually holds the title “Most Loyal, Noble and Undefeated Town, Port and Square of Santa Cruz de Santiago” for a very good reason and it is a reflection of historical milestones of the city, most importantly the one of never being conquered. A new initiative by History in Action Tours aims to emphasise and value one of the principle events of Santa Cruz’s history, if not the most important, known as “La Gesta” (literally “heroic deed”) of the 25th July 1797 which is when the city under the command of General Gutierrez managed to defend itself and repel the attack of one of England’s most famous admirals – Horatio Nelson. It is well known that Nelson lost an arm… but did you know that it was at the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife when he lost it thanks to cannon fire?

The tour by the company History in Action Tours goes by the name of “Nelson’s Challenge” and proposes a guided, dramatized tour of the principal spots of the city which recall La Gesta.

The excursion starts off under the arches of the Alameda del Duque Santa Elena where tourists can see a changing of the guard from the 18th Century. After the changing of the guard, which takes place on Saturdays at 10:30 and is free for everyone, there is a guided tour of the San Cristobal Castle Museum, in the Plaza de España, where the cannon responsible for Nelson’s lost arm is on display and the remains of the castle can be found. After this, excursionists are taken by bus to San Juan Castle (also known as the Black Castle) where actors will reenact certain events and interact with tourists. The tour will finish back in Plaza de España.

The tour lasts about 90 minutes and will take place on Saturdays at 11am and midday. For more information and tickets, you can visit the web Tenerife Nelson Tour.

Friday is Canarian Day!

Posted in: Elite Fuerteventura Club News, Fuerteventura, General, Tenerife, The Harbour Club News- May 27, 2014 No Comments

In Spain each region (or autonomous community) has its own special day, the 30th May is when the Canary Islands celebrates its special day, known as “El Día de Canarias” or Canarian Day. Various events take place in the islands to celebrate this day and it is also a “bank holiday”. This of course means that head office in Santa Cruz will be closed whilst the hard working staff in Los Gigantes and Caleta de Fuste carry on as usual (and it’s changeover day at The Harbour Club).

In Fuerteventura, the Antigua District Council has organised various activities in the public square of Caleta de Fuste and in Tenerife, in Santiago del Teide’s public square there will be various activities to extol the customs and cultural heritage of the community.

There will be a street market as well as workshops, exhibitions and various folk groups as well as a Dessert Competition from 1pm.

Playa la Arena48 beaches and marinas in the ‪Canary Islands‬ were awarded Blue Flags this year thanks to their services and high water quality.

That’s three more than last year!

In Santiago del Teide (the area in which Los Gigantes is found), the Los Gigantes Beach (Los Guios) and Marina were both awarded the blue flag, and in Playa La Arena, La Arena beach was too.

In Fuerteventura, the nearest Blue Flag beaches to Caleta de Fuste are Playa Blanca, just to the north outside Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal to the south.

British Harbour Club and Elite Fuerteventura Club owners… BEWARE!

bewareWe have been contacted by a concerned owner who has been cold-called by a company that claims to help people claim against their “resort, management company, resale company, exchange provider or any other entity connected with the purchase including any provider of credit or finance.” (sic)

A quick search on the internet brings up no end of results, some of which link this company and an apparent claim group against RCI to ITRA, DWVC, Incentive Leisure Group, Personal Travel Group and Club Class (closed down by the UK Government).

Is this company and those that operate in this manner trustworthy? Have a look at the following websites and reach your own conclusions!
