The name Indonesia has its roots in two Greek words: ¨Indos¨ meaning Indian and ¨Nesos¨ which means islands. Variety is the spice of life and nowhere is this more true than in Indonesia. No two places are alike in unspoiled beauty, art, culture and people.

Indonesia is a vast and beautifully diverse country stretching for more than 5,000kms across the equator. It would simply be impossible to see everything that this, the world’s largest archipelago, has to offer in ashort length of time. Vast and magnificent, the largest archipelago in the world, Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands.

There are five major islands in Indonesia – Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan/Borneo, Sulawesi/Celebes, and Irian Jaya/Papua. The most well-known island in Indonesia is probably Bali, which is one of the favorite destinations for both foreign and Indonesian tourists.Indonesia’s national motto is “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, meaning, “Unity in Diversity”. This tropical country has hundreds of ethnic groups and dialects. Being located near the equator, the Indonesian climate is divided into two seasons, one dryand one rainy.

Most of Indonesia has rainy seasons from October through April. Tourism, though, is seldom distracted by the rain asthis mostly occurs as showers in the late afternoon and at night to cool things down.Indonesia’s flora and fauna is as diversely rich as its land and people. Asian mammals populate the west, Australian marsupial species and birds occupy the east with the endemic species in the middle of the archipelago.Orangutans, tigers, one-horned rhinos, elephants, dugongs and komodo dragons arethe pride of Indonesia.

The seas around the archipelago also hold the country’s treasures,a rich marine environment that holds amyriad of species, including fish, corals and marine mammals. National parks around the archipelago preserve this rich natural heritage.Sometimes, after a visit to this place, you might find it difficult to leave, but remember that Indonesia is always here to welcome you back.
